Discussion: Poetry Reading and Conversation

On February 6^th, 2026, Amal Mathew, a young poet and poetry editor for The Bombay Literary Magazine read his poems and discussed his process of poetry with Aswin Vijayan, Assistant Professor, Department of English. Amal read his poem “St. Thomas Country” which was part of his creative writing project submitted for the completion of his MA in Literary Arts and Creative Writing from Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Delhi. He also broke down his creative process and talked about the politics of lived experience as a Savarna Christian raised abroad in upper class circumstances informs his creative practice. He discussed the necessity of interrogating privileged positions and “doing the labor” that informs one’s craft and content.
