Policy on Anti-Sexual Harassment
At The Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College, we uphold the principles of dignity, equality, and respect for all. As part of our unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment, we have instituted a comprehensive Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy. Our approach is rooted in the belief that every member of our community—students, faculty, and staff—deserves to work and study in a space free from harassment, intimidation, and discrimination.
We recognize the importance of creating a supportive and responsive framework that addresses issues of sexual harassment, and we strive to ensure that our campus remains a space where respect, consent, and personal boundaries are valued and upheld. To this end, we have established a proactive Institutional Complaints Committee (ICC) and launched awareness initiatives aimed at educating the community and preventing harassment.
Objectives
· Awareness and Education: To promote understanding of the legal and ethical dimensions surrounding sexual harassment, focusing on the importance of consent, personal boundaries, and respectful conduct in all interactions.
· Gender Sensitization: To ensure that all members of our college community are aware of their rights, entitlements, and responsibilities. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of equality and respect for diversity, with a particular focus on gender sensitivity.
· Prevention of Harassment: To prevent any act of physical, verbal, or non-verbal sexual misconduct by implementing comprehensive education, clear policies, and preventive measures. We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all individuals on campus.
· Support and Redressal: To provide immediate and comprehensive support services for survivors of sexual harassment, including counseling, legal advice, and procedural assistance. We also ensure swift and decisive actions against perpetrators, enforcing accountability through institutional disciplinary measures and legal recourse when necessary.
Our Institutional Complaints Committee (ICC)
The Institutional Complaints Committee (ICC) at The Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College plays a central role in our efforts to combat sexual harassment and ensure a safe campus. The ICC is tasked with creating awareness about gender issues, enforcing policies, and addressing complaints in a fair and timely manner. The committee is empowered to investigate incidents, recommend actions, and, if necessary, initiate legal proceedings against offenders.
The ICC collaborates with the Women’s Cell, which provides additional support for creating a harassment-free environment, while maintaining its autonomy to ensure unbiased action. Together, these bodies work to foster a culture of respect and zero tolerance for sexual harassment, both within and beyond the college premises.
Key Initiatives for Promoting Campus Safety and Gender Equality
· Training and Workshops: The ICC organizes regular workshops and training sessions for students, faculty, and staff on gender sensitization, respectful behavior, and harassment prevention. These programs are designed to raise awareness about rights and responsibilities under our Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy and to create a more inclusive environment.
· Complaint Redressal Mechanism: The ICC ensures a transparent and accessible complaint mechanism that allows individuals to report harassment in a safe and confidential manner. Information on how to file complaints and the redressal process is disseminated widely across the campus.
· Proactive Measures: In addition to addressing complaints, the ICC takes proactive steps to identify potential areas of concern and implement preventive measures. This includes reviewing campus policies, conducting surveys, and engaging with various stakeholders to continuously improve the safety and inclusivity of the college environment.
Composition and Tenure of the Institutional Complaints Committee (ICC)
· Presiding Officer: A senior faculty member, with a minimum rank of Associate Professor, chairs the committee to provide leadership and ensure effective functioning.
· Faculty Members: Two faculty members who are advocates for women’s rights and are committed to promoting gender equality are included in the committee.
· Non-Teaching Employees: Two representatives from the non-teaching staff are appointed to ensure diverse perspectives in decision-making.
· Student Representatives: In cases involving students, three student representatives are included to ensure that student concerns are addressed.
· External/NGO Representative: An external expert or representative from an NGO with expertise in dealing with sexual harassment cases provides independent oversight and guidance.
Members of the ICC serve a three-year term, with provisions for staggered membership turnover to maintain continuity and fresh perspectives.
